What is an RSSD ID?

Published September 20, 2026.

RSSD ID: The RSSD ID is the unique identifier the Federal Reserve assigns to every financial institution in its National Information Center.

Where it comes from

Assigned by the Fed and used as the primary key on the call report itself, which is why every bank page on this site carries it. It covers holding companies and branches as well as banks, so a bank and its parent hold different RSSD ids.

How to read it

If you are joining call report data to anything else, the RSSD id is the key to join on. Names change, certificate numbers retire, and the RSSD is the one identifier that is stable and present on every FFIEC file.

The common mistake. Joining on the bank name. The FFIEC files names in capitals and in legal form, so the same institution shows up as several different strings across sources, and a name join silently drops banks or merges two of them.

Knowing the definition is the easy half.

The hard half is whether a given bank’s number is good for the peer group it is actually measured in. That is what the scorecard does, for every bank that files a call report, updated with every FFIEC release.
