What is a brokered deposit?

Figures from FFIEC call reports for the quarter ending June 30, 2026. Published September 20, 2026.

Brokered deposits: A brokered deposit is money placed at a bank by a third party rather than by the depositor walking in.

How it is calculated

Reported on Schedule RC-E and shown here as a share of total deposits. The median bank reports none at all, which is why the distribution is mostly zeros with a long tail.

Formula

Brokered share = brokered deposits / total deposits

What banks reported in Q2 2026

Across every bank that filed for Q2 2026, the median brokered share of deposits was 0.00%, with the middle half between 0.00% and 4.32%. The right comparison is almost always the row for the bank’s own size rather than the industry line.

Bank size (total assets) Bottom quartile Median Top quartile
Under $100M 0.00% 0.00% 0.00%
$100M - $300M 0.00% 0.00% 2.41%

Source: BankingLens, computed from FFIEC call reports for the quarter ending June 30, 2026. Quartiles are calculated across the full population of filing banks in each size band, not sampled. Non-insured non-deposit trust companies are left out of every statistic: they take no deposits and make no loans, so a margin or a funding cost computed for them has no meaning.

How to read it

Brokered money is fast, priced at the national rate, and completely indifferent to the bank holding it. It is a legitimate funding tool and a normal part of a liability strategy. It is also the funding that leaves first, and a bank that is not well capitalized faces hard limits on accepting it.

The common mistake. Reading a zero as conservative funding. Listing services and reciprocal deposit networks fund a great deal of the industry and are reported separately, so a bank with no brokered deposits at all can still be funding itself with rate sensitive money.

Knowing the definition is the easy half.

The hard half is whether a given bank’s number is good for the peer group it is actually measured in. That is what the scorecard does, for every bank that files a call report, updated with every FFIEC release.
